The Utilities School is designed to increase practitioners' understanding of the utilities sector. The topics include presentations describing the operations of the electricity, gas and water sectors and key aspects of energy trading, regulation and industry issues. There are also opportunities for networking among participants.

The module on electrical power provides basic background information on electrical power. The topics offered include a definition of what electricity is as well as the three ways in which it is created. This course discusses the electric value chain, the three key design variables for electrical systems, a description of the units used to quantify electricity as well as those used to measure fossil fuels. The course also familiarizes participants with the various types of end-use and wholesale electricity customers, how they use electricity and how their specific needs are met by the energy companies that provide services to them. Concepts such as usage, patterns, daily and seasonal load curves and aggregate demands are explained. It also discusses electric service options that are available to each class of customers.

This course will familiarize participants with the primary functions involved in the operation of an electrical grid. The course includes details on how system operators work with load forecasts, available supply options, requirements for ancillary services, and the capacity of the transmission network to ensure safe and reliable electric supply to end-use customers. The course also addresses how the system is balanced in real time and the steps taken by operators to avoid outages and blackouts.

This course addresses the basic principles of regulation as it is applied globally and the complex mixture of supra-national, national, state and provincial, and local regulation that shapes and guides the electric industry. The course also addresses the various types of regulatory proceedings as well as step-by-step details on the utility ratemaking process.
